Pictures of the workshop for producing positive and negative electrodes of batteries

During discharge, PbSO 4 is produced on both negative and positive electrodes. If the batteries are overdischarged or are kept at a discharged state, the sulfate crystals become larger and are more difficult to break up during charge. In addition, the large size of lead sulfate crystals leads to active material disjoining from the plates.

How do batteries work? A simple introduction

The positive electrode is based on manganese (IV) oxide and the negative electrode is made of zinc, but the electrolyte is a concentrated alkaline solution (potassium hydroxide). Power is produced through two chemical reactions. At the positive electrode, manganese (IV) oxide is converted into manganese (III) oxide and hydroxyl ions.

What is an Electrode? (with pictures)

In the case of a direct (DC) current, electrodes come in pairs, and are known as anodes and cathodes. For a battery, or other DC source, the cathode is defined as the electrode from which the current leaves, and the anode as the point where it returns. For reasons that are historical rather than scientific, electricity in a circuit is, by convention, …

The electrodes are always made of different substances, one of which attracts electrons more strongly than the other. The electrode that attracts electrons is called the positive electrode or cathode, because it has a positive electric charge. The one that releases electrons is called the negative electrode or anode; it has a negative charge.
